Rachel vs. “Uncle Pat”: a riveting rebuttal to Republican racism
Last night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow conducted a fascinating and riveting debate with right-wing conservative and former Republican presidential candidate, Pat Buchanan, on the role of affirmative action in the Supreme Court nomination of Sonia Sotomayor.
Maddow denoted that 108 of 110 Supreme Court justices have been white, Buchanan responded, “White men were 100% of the people that wrote the Constitution, 100% of the people that signed the Declaration of Independence, 100% of the people who died at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, probably close to 100% of the people who died at Normandy. This has been a country built basically by white folks.” Take a look.

Perhaps Mr. Buchanan should consult The Colors of Courage: Gettysburg’s Forgotten History: Immigrants, Women, and African Americans in the Civil War’s Defining Battle by Margaret S. Creighton. A simple Google search of the all-black 320th Battalion who participated in the bloody D-Day landings that launched the Allied liberation of France would provide Mr. Buchanan with a necessary source of correct information.
This is just another example of Republican revisionist history erroneously and purposely used to support racist and discriminatory views. “Uncle Pat’”, as Rachel sometimes refers to Buchanan, reminds me so much of the crazy uncles I remember so well growing up in the South. We just stuck them out there on the front porch with a glass of sweet tea and let them rail about the destruction of the white man and the end of the country as we know it. Who were they going to hurt? It’s not like anyone was really going to hear them above the braying of the coonhounds and the banjo music.

“Uncle Pat”, however, has a national voice with a discriminatory platform eagerly broadcast without opposition by so-called news media. I applaud Rachel Maddow and MSNBC for airing an intelligent rebuttal to these ridiculous, and often unchallenged, archaic views of a political party that is being left behind.
As I so often say, let them keep talking…

It is like seeing a dinosaur…
Those poor rich white male millionaires… maybe we should start a charity.
The nerve of the country giving ANY of the power to people of color or women… Shameful…
LMAO
“This has been a country built basically by white folks.”
Gee, think how much more could have been built, if those white folks had owned black slaves to do the work!
Oh, wait a minute…
