Last night, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, performed swimmingly through the bikini competition. The evening gown portion was a designer’s dream. She was well on her way to the crown of Donald Trump’s latest vehicle to pimp Celebrity Apprentice, the title of Miss USA. Going into the question and answer session, her closest competition, Miss North Carolina was behind by only a well sprayed hair. But with one short, disjointed answer, Miss California became the one to assume the throne should there be any reason the newly crowned Miss USA be unable to fulfill her duties.

Reminiscent of last year’s Miss Teen South Carolina and her lament for those of us who don’t have maps like such as South Africa and the Eye-rack, Miss California was asked by celebrity judge and gossip blogger, Perez Hilton, if she believed every state should follow in the legislative footsteps of Vermont which recently became the fourth state legislature to legalize same-sex marriage. Why or why not? Can’t you just hear the conversation she was having in her head as Perez asked the question, “Oh no, why didn’t he ask me about world peace or my favorite color? I love world peace, and my favorite color is red, white, and blue.”

She started off a little rough, “Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other,” she said. There’s that choice thing again. Why is it the only choice right wingers believe in is the choice of sexuality?

She continued, “We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage.” Opposite marriage? What’s that? I think we all know, but I’m not sure I have ever heard it put quite like that.

Then she said, “And you know what, in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you very much.” A very honest statement, and one reiterated by the Democratic and Republican Presidential candidates in the last national election cycle.

[youtube criiu2h3ZAk nolink]

The same can be said for Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, and Joe Biden.

My question is this. How can we hold a beauty queen to a standard to which we are not holding our own President? She was honest, she didn’t waiver in her belief, and she didn’t flip flop. Gay marriage is not something she can support. I’m fine with that. We all have different opinions, and I don’t think she should be confused with the pageant winner from Wasilla. Her sister is a gay rights activist in the military. Don’t ask, don’t tell…something does tell me this family is a little more enlightened than many of us.

Perez Hilton said she should have given a more politically correct answer. To me, that’s just wrong. I am sick and more than a little tired of political correctness. We deserve a little honest discussion in this country…from our “queens” to our politicians.
